SDG Wheel Transparent – Bountifield International

The following recommendations are based on stakeholder mapping and outreach, and a cross-sector group gap analysis.

The students gathered information with a focus on either the public, private, or non-profit sectors in L.A., but combined their findings to present recommendations to the City on ten of the seventeen Global Goals. What follows is an excerpt of these recommendations.

Each recommendation has one of the following classifications:

Gender Equality

Explicitly include LGBTQIA+ and non-conforming genders.

Consider ways to explicitly include gender equity initiatives in the description of budgets and programs; look to gender-based budgeting for possible lessons.


Revise target and indicator language to better express L.A.’s commitment to supporting LGBTQIA+ communities.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

Foster the thriving ecosystem of social enterprise.

Support networks of social enterprises to encourage sharing of best practices and data.

Sustainable Cities and Communities

Look for ways to promote access in underserved or vulnerable communities.

11.1 Affordable Housing


Look for partnerships in social enterprise-funded and other innovative approaches to provide affordable housing. Consider how to re-purpose city properties.

11.2 Public Transportation

Work with the Departments of Disability and Transportation to consider system-wide accessibility. Explore how digital mapping applications may allow for the crowd-sourcing of accessibility and obstructions in real-time. Consider adding a disability review as part of the approval process for City plans and initiatives.

11.4 Preserve Cultural and Natural Heritage


Define data measures for 11.4 to contribute to conservation and preservation efforts worldwide.

11.5 Emergency Preparedness

Profile vulnerable populations, systems, and places to develop tailored prevention and mitigation plans, particularly for climate resilience.

11.7 Access to Green Space

Share interim progress measures and report results on green space initiatives. Update and map information about L.A.’s recreation, parks, and green space resources, as well as connectivity to transit options.

Use the SDG framework to keep equity at the forefront of development. Use the SDGs to bridge efforts across jurisdictions (City, County, Regional). Research and identify points of tension within the framework that may impact progress toward the goals, and revise/adjust certain targets to better reflect our local context.

Support emerging industries and social enterprise aligned to SDG framework. Consider how procurement practices may prioritize social enterprise and economic, social, and environmental sustainability, and consider models from L.A. County and other municipalities. Cultivate L.A. as an epicenter for social good by fostering networks among small and local business owners, social entrepreneurs, and other for-profit organizations focused on community building.

Learn from best practices on measuring and communicating impact. Adopt best practices from nonprofit and grant-making organizations (e.g. L.A. Cleantech Incubator’s “Just Impact Report,” Advancement Project’s Healthy City online data collection platform) to connect service providers to funding opportunities, volunteers to service opportunities, and academics to research opportunities by using the SDG framework as a common language on City platforms.

Develop platforms for reporting and engagement on the City’s SDG progress. Localize targets and indicators to better reflect city priorities. Map all existing data sources to SDG indicators to establish a baseline. Create a Voluntary Local Review (VLR) in partnership with other global cities to report L.A.’s progress. Consider establishing an SDG Advisory Council modeled on similar successful examples within the City, with representatives from the private, nonprofit, academic, and public sectors.
