THE SDGs IN LA

Los Angeles is at the forefront of the global movement to realize the SDGs.  In 2017, Mayor Eric Garcetti launched a city-wide effort to advance the global goals by starting at home, measuring our local progress and building new partnerships for action. The City of Los Angeles is one of the first cities to report on more than 170 SDG indicators using the Open SDG platform. In July of 2019, the City of Los Angeles published its first Voluntary Local Review, highlighting eight goals while mapping the City's efforts across all seventeen global goals. And in September 2021, Los Angeles published its second Voluntary Local Review with new data and programs that advance the SDGs in L.A.

THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the 2030 Agenda, are a group of 17 goals and 169 targets. The SDGs build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and were adopted by all 193 member states of the United Nations in 2015. The SDGs aim to address social inequality, economic growth, environmental preservation, and leave no one behind in achieving the future we want. While formulated for national governments, subnational governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector worldwide have adopted the SDGs and are actively aligning their plans and activities toward this shared development agenda. Los Angeles was one of the first cities to demonstrate its commitment through active stakeholder engagement, localized reporting, and the development of new, open-source tools to support others on this journey.
